Why Lunar New Year is the Worst Public Holiday

  1. Need to clean room before the holiday.
  2. Expensive Hair Cut
  3. Long queues everywhere before the holiday
  4. Lousy quality for Lunar New Year goodies because of high demand
  5. Almost all shops are closed during the holidays
  6. Extremely bad TV shows (TWO Jackie Chan shows. OMG!)
  7. No good movies to watch
  8. Buses very very infrequent
  9. Growing fat from the food

Family Reunion Dinner

My family had been eating out for the family reunion dinner on Lunar New Year Eve since last year. It was a great idea because it saved my mother a lot of cooking and cleaning time (, although she will still cook on the 2nd Day at my auntie's house :-) )

Anyway, last year we went to Chinese Tea House by Tung Lok Group because I booked the dinner very near the actual day and most restaurants were already fully booked. That meal was horrible, the food was bad, the service was bad and it was damn expensive.

This year we went to Dian Xiao Er (see earlier post) for the family reunion dinner and I must say everyone was pretty pleased with the meal.

The Yu Sheng was pretty normal. The Shark Fin was very good. To quote my sister, we actually tasted shark fin and crab meat :-P. The Shi Quan Herbal Duck was pretty okay, I personally felt the Ginseng version is much better. The rest of the dishes were also pretty good, except the fried rice which was too salty.

The service was excellent. Everyone was happy. We might go back there next year. :-D

Pre-Lunar New Year Reunion Lunch

I went to Soup restaurant at Suntec for a Pre-Lunar New Year Reunion Lunch with my colleagues on Thursday. We ordered the Heritage Set Meal and I must say it was quite worth it. Every dish is nice and we had a very very good meal.

What is a Lunar New Year meal without Yu Sheng? It used to be taken only on the seventh day of the Lunar New Year for prosperity and good luck, but nowadays, we can have it even before the New Year :P

The cold dish is quite good, althought it is a bit plain.

This is the special dish, Basin Vegetable. Traditionally cooked in a basin full of assorted vegetable, now it is presented in a nice claypot.

Everyone is so happy :-D

A Million Dollar Idea

How to you earn a million dollars quickly? You don't have to be the winner of "Who Wants to be a Millionaire", "Survivor" or "The Amazing Race". All you need is a "sit-down-shake-leg-earn-money" formula.

Last year, a 21-year old came up with a brillant idea to fund his university education: To sell one million pixels of his homepage for US$1 each. Hence, 'The Million Dollar Homepage'. You can purchase a block of space to put an ad linking to the your website. Once bought, the space is yours guaranteed for at least 5 years, or maybe forever. If you think about it, this is actually cheaper than putting ads on Google!

His website has been very well-received since its launch on 26 Aug. Recently, the last 1000 block of space has been auctioned off at a mind-boggling price of US$38100 at eBay! Congrats to Alex Tew for becoming more than a millionaire in just 4.5 months! I wish him the best in his degree programme.

Sparkling New MRT Station

I went to see the new opened Buangkok MRT Station. Feels very very new, but very very empty. No wonder they don't want to open it :P

Flowers@SGH

Hospital can be such a depressing place. As you walk along the corridors, you see people in bandages, passerbys with crutches or on wheelchairs, injuried with pained look on their faces and family members with worried expressions.

So, when I passed a corridor in SGH, I was pleasantly surprised. There are a lot of paper flowers on the way. And a lot of them have very nice get well messages on them. It really warms the heart.

Baby Clone

With citysea's help I have created a clone of my baby. The brain is a old AMD from my sister's old computer, but the rest of the body parts are from my baby.

0.85 Terabyte

I have 6 hard disk:

40 Gb
80 Gb
120 Gb
160 Gb
200 Gb
250 Gb

Total = 850 Gb.

My Baby is Dead!

Sigh! After faithful serving me for nearly 3 years, my Pentium baby is dead. It went with a big bang, with smoke and sparks and then simply refused to response anymore. I just hope I am able to harvest its organs, especially its brain (hard disk) and the memory contex I just implanted.(1 Gb RAM).

Yes, we had our differences at times. Our relationship had not been totally trouble free. She has her tantrums and refuse to work at times. But she was a faithful servant most of the times, sometime tolling non-stop for months.

Perhaps I have mistreated her. I neglected to clean and detox her regularly. Now she is gone... I regretted not treating her better.

Farewell my baby. I am going to miss you....

Phantasmagoric Find

I've stumped upon Flickeur today. It glued my eyes to the screen for at least 15 minutes! This is truly one of the most interesting websites that I've come across. According to the author:
"Flickeur (pronounced like Voyeur) randomly retrieves images from Flickr.com and creates an infinite film with a style that can vary between stream-of-consciousness, documentary or video clip. All the blends, motions, zooms or timeleaps are completely random. Flickeur works like a looped magnetic tape where incoming images will merge with older materials and be influenced by the older recordings' magnetic memory. The virtual tape will also play and record forward and backward to create another layer of randomness. This principle will create its own sometimes very suggestive or scary story."

Mirror

Do you ever notice that when you look into the mirror after a workout at gym or after a swim, you tend to look a lot leaner?

And when you are in the changing room trying out new clothes, you tend to look out of shape, with unwanted fats sticking out at all the wrong places?

This is what I feel when I was trying out a new shirt from G2000. Sigh. Must do a lot more exercise, else how to fulfill new year resolution? ;(

sleep

If you happen to pass by Wheelock Place from now till 5 Feb, be sure to drop by epSite Epson Imaging Gallery (3rd floor opposite Nokia Care Centre).

There is a interesting exhibition by renowned photographer Derrick Lim showing various MediaCorp artistes sleeping in different positions. Look out for Zoe Tay's dog, Christopher Lee's peeing and Vincent Ng's acrobatic sleeping positions.

Since yesterday and today's calendar paper is worthless tips, the paper for 13 Jan 2006 has no use. So I use it to fold a crane instead. I am good at it :-)
